Uploads to Reasonate

Posted 08 Jun 2006 at 9:04pm to Nick's personal blog

I see everybody is putting a lot of stuff onto Reasonate rather than leaving the website to tell the story!! Maybe I've read the brief wrong and missed something so just in case here are some uploads:

HDRI Image

3ds Interactive Model via Deep Exploration

As I said this is all on my website!! So i'm just covering myself.

Also as stated in an earlir posting, uploading my renders is pointless - they are too big and can be seen on the website.

Our model is too complex!!!

We have tried getting our model into sketch-up numerous different ways. All are failing to import our model completely. The most noticeable thing that it is not registring with sketchup is the front facade - this is effectively what makes the building so we are unsure what to do.

Any comments

Post Comments - Rendering

Posted 08 Jun 2006 at 8:44pm to Nick's personal blog

Completely unfamiliar with both the modelling process using computer applications and rendering engines before this course I have come to a few conclusions at the end the struggle all be it a little uneducated as I am still a complete novice.

Models need to be detailed!! - I found personally that cheating at the begining comes back to bite you at the end. Light gets in where you don't want it to, objects don't join and render properly etc all because you try to cheat at the beginning. The moral of our story - do worry about the little things at the beginning.

I noticed that applying perfect materials to a scene doesnt necessarily show an idea or space better than  a good lighting system. In my renders I have tried to apply good, realistic lghting systems rather than creating 'photo's that look good' which are made that way by unrealistic settings on lights in random positions etc. Also to because our building is an unresolved competition entry I played with form and the way light interacts with this form aswell as the eutral materials.

Finally, high quality renders are as good as low quality when you dont have the materials and lighting right!!

All is complete!!! And up and going

Posted 08 Jun 2006 at 8:28pm to Nick's personal blog

My renders are complete, and so to is my website on which they are posted!!! Finally after a long struggle with computers, files, crashes, corruptions and frozen screens its over. My whole bbsc303 experience has been documented and is up for observation on the web at my web area via Reasonate as of ............ now!!!

Final Renders Complete

Posted 08 Jun 2006 at 8:25pm to the Te Papa Museum Extension project

Finally after much frustration and perserverance I have managed t comlete 16 final renders using the VIZ Mental Ray and Rayfront Rendering Engines. As a complete stranger to rendering engines and the concepts behind rendering before the beginning of this course I feel I have learnt an exceptional amount that can defintely be drawn on in my future projects whether I decide to battle with computers again or not. When you come to the rendering process you definately realise the little details focused on during the modelling process are what make the difference between an average render and a good one. I personally have learnt that it definately pays off to spend a little extra time at the initial stage of the process with details rather than try and back track at the end.

My renders are large jpeg files as thier original size is 1800 x 1360 so rather than trying to upload them onto Reasoate have a look at them on my website. They all work fine and also attached are the settings for each of the renders.

Importing into Rayfront

Posted 07 Jun 2006 at 8:43pm to the Te Papa Museum Extension project

After many attempts at importing our 3ds model into Rayfront we are yet to succeed and are at the point we believe it is impossible. Unable to import it as a whole model we broke it into six sections. Ramps, Mullions, Glazing, Walls, Floorslabs, and the Landscape were all exported as 3ds files individually. They were then converted to dxf files using Deep Exploration and then imported into Rayfront. Only the Glazing, Walls, Floors and Landscapes were successful. The other objects failed and therefore we have an incomplete model to try and work with.

Interim Renders

Posted 06 Jun 2006 at 12:57am to Nick's personal blog

After a big clean-up of my files on my ipod and I:\ drive the exterior interims have been located!! Hopefully soon I can find where I have hidden my interiors. They have all been done in VIZ Mental Ray but as we all know, a range of rendering engines will be used for the final hand-in. These renders came a week after actual interim, having handed in a powerpoint of screen shots for the actual interim date. They are here now however. They are done at 800 x 600 jpeg format. Since then I have learnt about the benefits of saving images as tiffs. You have the ability to seperate the alpha channel which can be useful if the images go into Photoshop. But as jpeg's they are attached below. Enjoy.

Website Check - Errors

Posted 04 Jun 2006 at 11:14am to Nick's personal blog

Eager to see whether my website was successfully uploaded onto the Internet I opened my website from home. Unfortunately I found two errors , well 1 error and 1 thing that perhaps could be fixed in the future. The error is on my 'tutorial renders' page. I thought I had fixed the problem before I had left school last night but it appears either that the website has not been updated or there has been a problem on my part in the 'putting' of my updated page into the R:\drive hand-in folder. The error is simply a piece of text that has accidently been copied into an editable region at the top of the page that shouldn't be there. Hopefully I get the chance to fix this in the near future.

The other thing is the solution to the roll-over image crisis!! I used the 'home' page as my location for all the hidden images at the bottom of my page. There is nothing wrong with the site and page other than it takes a little bit longer to upload all these hidden pages. Perhaps a way of fixing this could be to put all of these images on their own seperate page. This means they wont affect any of the active pages.

Apart from that I am really happy with the way it has all come together!!!

P.S. Mike -  Although hand-in has passed are we still allowed to access our website and fix these minor errors without penalty?

Thanks

Website Hand-in

Posted 03 Jun 2006 at 9:50pm to Nick's personal blog

After much frustration I have finally solved my problems and my website has been successfully completed and uploaded onto the internet via Reasonate.

There are a number of things not yet featuring on the website however they will come with the coimpletion of Assignemnt #1 - Modelling.

Features and content to be added includes:

Fully completed AutoCAD Model of the UN Studio Design

Fully Interactive 3ds Model of the building

Interim Renders

Final Renders

A problem that I did incur however, and one that I found no solution to was giving access to the download of my DWG AutoCAD files. I was able to provide links to download dialouge boxes for my ArchiCAD and Revit tutorial files but this method did not work for .dwg files. If anybody has a clue to how I could fix this it would be appreciated.

It's done!!!

Now the renders

Uploading my Website

Posted 03 Jun 2006 at 4:52pm to Nick's personal blog

I am having considerable trouble understanding the uploading process of my website to the R:\ Drive Hand-in folders and\or the Reasonate Website.

I have fully finished my website with a few exceptions

    - Interim Renders

    - Final Renders

    - Final AutoCAD Model

These will be added to the website at the completion of the course.

Everything associated with my website is in             I:\www      (owennich on 'tearo\students)

I have all my images in the default image folder      I:\www\images

My website works perfectly! But it is at this point that I get stuck

I have copied all of the contents from my I:\www file into the R:\ drive hand-in folder R:\ARCHITECTURE_School\Hand-ins_Folders\BBSC303\Owen_Nicholas

Then get the impression from people that I simply go onto my blog area on reasonate - click the upload / synchronize button that appears next to the 'Tag' button and all should be dandy!!

This is not working

Help!!!
