Mike/David,
I have just checked my website this morning after uploading it last night to the web from dreamweaver. I notice that my website hasn't been updated. Before I left university last night however I checked that it worked on the 'R' drive and it did.
Regards,
Nick Deans

Final Renders!!!
Posted 08 Jun 2006 at 10:52pm by Nicholas Deans
Google Earth

Our model is too complex!!!
We have tried getting our model into sketch-up numerous different ways. All are failing to import our model completely. The most noticeable thing that it is not registring with sketchup is the front facade - this is effectively what makes the building so we are unsure what to do.
Any comments
Final Renders Complete
Posted 08 Jun 2006 at 8:25pm by Nick Owen
Finally after much frustration and perserverance I have managed t comlete 16 final renders using the VIZ Mental Ray and Rayfront Rendering Engines. As a complete stranger to rendering engines and the concepts behind rendering before the beginning of this course I feel I have learnt an exceptional amount that can defintely be drawn on in my future projects whether I decide to battle with computers again or not. When you come to the rendering process you definately realise the little details focused on during the modelling process are what make the difference between an average render and a good one. I personally have learnt that it definately pays off to spend a little extra time at the initial stage of the process with details rather than try and back track at the end.
My renders are large jpeg files as thier original size is 1800 x 1360 so rather than trying to upload them onto Reasoate have a look at them on my website. They all work fine and also attached are the settings for each of the renders.
Rayfront Importing Issues
Posted 07 Jun 2006 at 8:43pm by Nicholas Deans
Mike,
We are having a few issues importing our model into Rayfront to produce renderings. We employed the help of Kieren Wells, a former student of yours who is abit of a Rayfront Guru. He recommended breaking the model down into parts, we followed this suggestion, but were unable to import the interior forms, therefore we were left with a shell. This is not of much use to use for interior lighting anaylsis. We ended up breaking it up into 6 sections, ramps, mullions, glazing, walls, floorslabs, and landscaping. But still the problem persisted. Do you have any suggestions??

Nick Deans
Importing into Rayfront
Posted 07 Jun 2006 at 8:43pm by Nick Owen
After many attempts at importing our 3ds model into Rayfront we are yet to succeed and are at the point we believe it is impossible. Unable to import it as a whole model we broke it into six sections. Ramps, Mullions, Glazing, Walls, Floorslabs, and the Landscape were all exported as 3ds files individually. They were then converted to dxf files using Deep Exploration and then imported into Rayfront. Only the Glazing, Walls, Floors and Landscapes were successful. The other objects failed and therefore we have an incomplete model to try and work with.
Lighting
Posted 06 Jun 2006 at 8:36pm by Nicholas Deans
Finally got the lighting right. What a pain in the neck, I finally worked out what was going on with the shadows, and HDRI map. I worked out that the Mental Ray Light Shader "Light Infinite (base)" had the shadows turned off for some reason, I've never had that issue. But with some careful backtracking I worked it out.
See the attached renders, along with the lighting I've been fine tuning some of the camera angles.

Mike Donn: Rhino or 3DS max
12 May 2006 at 1:54pm
From the people I have talked to, apart from the 3D modelling approach that I have described to Nick, you could do this as a two rail sweep (look up the definitions in the help files) in Rhino or in 3DS Max. Note, Max has more modelling tools than Viz but has a very similar interface so you could find that an ok step up from where you are at already. Rhino would require us to install the software somewhere...
